yesterday, i got up before the crack of dawn and headed out to joshua tree park for some day trippin' with some other photographers from the b-school. i had never been, so i figured this was a good opportunity to see what it was all about - and nobody got lost! there was of course a U2 tribute on the way in, plenty of laughter, a few show tunes, and just a great time! here's joe photo getting ready for his close-up. joe organizes all the day trippin' activities. thanks, joe! the super amazing thomas pellicer and the fabulous karen revellematt saville getting ready for a quick drive...amber fox being...well...dare i say it?...foxy. sorry. couldn't resist.
sometimes i really forget what makes california so great. yesterday i watched the sunset over downtown LA from the Griffith Park Observatory. people were just kind of wandering around watching the sun disappear and enjoying the amazingly warm weather (and time change). although there was some haze, you could see all the way out to the ocean. it was stunning. i stayed a little longer to watch the city light up and then made my way home...with the sunroof open!
i can't believe how quickly time has flown...this adorable guy is already one! we hit laguna on a gorgeous day in february (when DC was digging out of snow and Atlanta was getting an inch or so) to take some beach pictures and capture what being one is all about. he could not have been more cooperative (no crying at all!) and amazed at the surf and sand. i think there was even a taste test going on...
i didn't get to spend valentine's day with the one i love, but i got to do the next best thing! i spent the day with some photography friends talking shop and shooting pictures at the arboretum. in the 4 years we have lived here, i had never been. evidently valentine's day on a holiday weekend isn't the best time to go either...but we made it through the crowds and had a great time!remember the house in fantasy island?! this is it....the plane the plane!
so as i said, i started off the new year taking pictures and as promised, here are the rest from the shoot in the park. while these 2 are my nieces, the shoot was very professional...they even told me that i sounded like a photographer and not an aunt. :) it was lots of fun to wander around the park for some pictures. we even brought all sorts of props with us and i think a couple of models were created!
i think the title says it all.
the syncopaths are amazing musicians. i didn't really realize how amazing until we got to the point in the session where they were finally able to play. you could tell they were anxious to get back to the music and trust me - if you saw the calm and joy wash over them as the music filled the air, you would understand. this shoot was a HUGE challenge for me and a great learning experience. be sure to look for their new CD soon - it might have an alyson cohen image on the front! :)
it's not often that you find a portrait photographer taking pictures for a band...let alone a contra dance band (if you don't know about it, check out the link - it's really interesting) but i was fortunate enough that the syncopaths were willing to let me try to capture their amazing personalities and vibe for some new band photos. here's a quick preview...more to come!
the ladies from the pasadena children's guild and the folks at salon aguayo got together to host a beauty boot camp this week to benefit the guild. you know how you can't quite ever get your hair to look the same as it does when you leave the salon? well the ladies who attended the boot camp received personalized instruction in how to acheive a salon looking blow-out, sampled some spa services and got other great beauty tips. such a great idea! and here are some of the ladies with their finished looks! fabulous!
the party continues...the girls were treated to manicures, facials and lots of cool spa things.as the sun set, the mood around the party got spooky and the campfires and smores were in full effect!after a good night of sleep (ha ha!) everyone recharged the following morning with breakfast and was ready for the water balloon toss.last, but of course not least was a great game of family feud!a big thanks to nathanson's who sent me to capture the wonderful moments at this amazing party!
this was the most amazing birthday party! i tried to sneak in as a guest, but since i am slightly older than 10, i kind of didn't fit in. i am going to have to break this post up because there were so many fun details and things to do! so let's start with everyone's favorite...the cake. there was a Clue mystery during the party - complete with all the characters. the party guests followed clues throughout the house to solve the mystery. the cake was...as you can tell...Clue cupcakes! outside it was a pink wonderland!there were all sorts of fun drinks...including snow cones!there were games everywhere!stay tuned...there's more to come!
there is evidently something very, very engaging about spongebob...
this was an amazing wedding at the skirball center in los angeles. i was again working with nathanson's to capture the details and craziness of the evening. the groomsmen spent most of the event betting on who could make the groom cry first and actually had success! and then the maid of honor did a fantastic rendition of "baby got back" that brought the crowd to their feet. here's the maid of honor and the groom busting out their moves during her serenade...and then the bride and one of the bridesmaids...
this was the first time i had been to napa...only took us 3 years of living on this coast to get there! the trip was well worth it (anything to get JC off his blackberry even for an hour!) we woke up before the sunrise to take a hot-air balloon ride over the valley. there was some fog, but the whole valley was dotted with balloons. honestly, i am not a fan of heights so i was gripping the basket and trying to breathe - we were 1450 feet up and flew for almost 5 miles.we watched the sun come up over the mountains which was truly amazing from that height...and yes - I was still gripping the sides of the basket.once we were safely on the ground (phew!) we headed out for an afternoon of wine tasting.
i shot a joint bat mitzvah for 2 sisters over july 4th weekend with the folks from nathanson's. it was a good event for me to start getting back in the swing of things after my surgery. i got to focus on the details of the weekend and there were really some amazing ones! fun with the fisheye...they had these special kippahs out for all the trojan fans...and there were quite a few! and then it was onto the party!every table had roses in various colors with matching table cloths. they were amazing!and there was a fun photobooth for a scrapbook pictures
on friday night, the Pasadena Children's Guild had a western themed cocktail party to welcome its new members. they are a great group who work to improve the lives of children with special needs. check out their website to learn more!
